Eagle 45: Celebrating a Legacy of Liberation

For 45 years, Eagle Amsterdam has been a beacon of progressive freedom and entertainment. Not only is it an iconic venue in the gay and queer scene, but it’s also housed in a national monument—the oldest residential building in Amsterdam—on Warmoesstraat, the city’s medieval main shopping street. Though its historical grandeur is less visible today, Warmoesstraat remains a bustling hub, crowded with tourists often unaware that amidst the snack bars, cafés, and tattoo parlors lies a venue that has long played a pivotal role in the LGBTQ+ community.

Eagle Amsterdam holds significant cultural importance. Some tourists stop in front of number 86, now home to Dirty Dicks, captivated by the bold images displayed. They laugh, point, and snap photos, exclaiming, “This could only happen in Amsterdam!”

Named after New York’s famous leather bar, The Eagle’s Nest, Eagle Amsterdam shares its name with 30 other clubs worldwide. When it reopened in April 2012, “Amsterdam” was added to distinguish it from its global counterparts. Now, clubs like Eagle New York, Eagle London, and more share the same renowned name, but each operates independently.

Visitors flock to Eagle for a reason. Inside this unique venue at number 90, guests find a true sanctuary—a safe space to meet like-minded individuals and freely express their sexuality, fetishes, or kinks. Eagle is known both in the Netherlands and abroad as a space where you can explore your identity, make friends, and maybe even celebrate a coming-out moment. It’s a welcoming venue for casual connections, or simply enjoying the atmosphere.

Founded in 1979 as a leather and cruise bar at Warmoesstraat 86, Eagle moved to its current location in 1994, while Dirty Dicks opened at the original address. As one of Amsterdam’s oldest gay clubs, Eagle celebrates its 45th anniversary this year with a packed weekend of events in October.

Though the two venues operate separately, they share a strong connection. Dirty Dicks has a rougher, kinkier vibe, while Eagle stays open until 5 a.m., offering a more cruise-centric experience. The close proximity between the two ensures guests can move safely between venues and continue their night in a secure environment until the early morning hours.

Michael Roks, who took over Eagle in 2011 after a two-year closure, has rejuvenated the club with fresh energy and ideas. Coming from a background in film and TV, Roks brought modernized concepts and a vision to broaden Eagle’s appeal. He reintroduced beloved events from the past and created new ones, hosting over 150 fetish and sexually themed parties each year, serving various groups within the LGBTQIA+ spectrum.

At Eagle, safety and inclusivity are top priorities. Roks and his team have cultivated a keen sense for security, ensuring a welcoming and secure environment for all. The club’s reputation draws both regulars and international visitors, typically aged 25 to 50, all of whom are embraced by the club’s friendly atmosphere. Once inside, patrons find a mysterious, old-Amsterdam vibe, complete with a cozy bar, dance floor, video walls, and intimate spaces designed for exploration and connection.

The club is impeccably maintained, with a focus on hygiene. Guests have access to soap, disinfectants, free condoms, and lubricant. The staff is friendly, always available for a chat, particularly with first-time visitors. The venue also hosts live DJs on weekends, and its layout, featuring multiple levels and hidden corners, adds to the appeal.

Eagle Amsterdam stands out for its diverse range of themed nights. From Horsemen & Knights to Bear Bash, Ready2Play, and The MeanTime, there’s something for everyone. Collaborations with international events like FickStutenMarkt Berlin and local organizations, including House of KWIK, further expand its offerings.

Roks and other venue partners co-organize major events like Leather & Fetish Pride Amsterdam and Bear Pride Amsterdam, solidifying Eagle’s status as a major player in the fetish scene. Eagle Amsterdam embodies the spirit of freedom, openness, and community, all integral to Amsterdam’s character. As the club marks its 45th anniversary, it continues to welcome all who seek a place to express and explore their true selves.
