As the world is opening again, the excitement is in the air for the second edition of the Dutch Rubbermen weekend, which will take place in Amsterdam during the Ascension weekend on 27th-29th May 2022. It will be a weekend full of events, from a fetish pub quiz and fundraiser to a walking tour and the election of Mr Rubber Netherlands. This will also be the first large fetish community event of the year in The Netherlands.
Since 2010, a Mister Rubber contest is held in the Netherlands every year and is mostly about having fun, inclusiveness and acceptance of the rubber scene. In May 2019, the election show and party were developed into a full weekend of events, which became the first Dutch Rubbermen weekend (#DRUM1). The first edition has been a huge success that brought together rubbermen from all corners of The Netherlands, as well as rubberists from neighbouring countries and even the USA and Canada. Everything was ready for the second edition in May 2020, but we had to wait two more years.
The Dutch Rubbermen weekend is organised by a group of volunteers from both the Mr Rubber Netherlands foundation and the Dutch Rubbermen Club. They offer an extensive program of self-organised activities and parties. All events are hosted by collaborating bars or clubs that are well known for their active support of the kink community.
Following up on the success of the first edition, the 2022 weekend will see a very similar programme, with the opening on Friday afternoon with welcome drinks at Prik. During this drink, a fetish pub quiz with great prizes will be held to raise funds for The PlanetRomeo Foundation. This will be followed by a rubber social at Dirty Dicks.
On Saturday afternoon there will be a private walking tour in the centre about the rainbow history of Amsterdam – in rubber if you so desire. After some refreshments and snacks at The Web, the main party including the Mr Rubber NL 2022 election will take place at Eagle Amsterdam. The weekend will be concluded with Sunday afternoon meet-the-winner drinks at Prik.
Due to the special circumstances of the last two years, the current Mr Rubber Netherlands – Adalberto – has carried the sash since 2019. And in November 2019, just a few months before the first lockdown, he was elected Mr International Rubber 23.
What were some highlights of your Mr Rubber NL title? Adalberto: “I am very proud I lead the first official participation of the Dutch Rubbermen to the Pride Walk in Amsterdam in 2019, promoting the visibility of kinks within our rainbow community and beyond. I also attended many other Pride events all over the Netherlands, from Amersfoort in the heatwave with 42ºC (in rubber, of course!) to Zwolle and Rotterdam. Furthermore, I established new connections and strengthened existing ones with other rubbermen communities in Europe and outside.”
How does it feel to eventually pass on the Dutch sash to a new ambassador after three years? Adalberto: “First of all, I am very excited that we can organise a full rubber weekend again because the first edition was truly a blast! We rubberists know how to put on a show and have fun, and this is something I for sure missed in the last years. It’s been incredible to see how our community stuck together in the last two years, organising very creative online social events, pub quizzes and shows, etc. And now it feels so so good to be back in person and for sure I look forward to meeting the contestants for Mr Rubber 2022 and seeing them putting themselves out there on the stage!”
Overall a very diverse and fun programme that makes the Dutch Rubbermen weekend one of the events not to be missed! Most events are free, while the walking tour and the main party on Saturday can be accessed for a modest fee. All program information and tickets are available on dutchrubbermen.nl.
Moreover, the Dutch Rubbermen have just published their calendar of rubber socials for the whole year. Have fun and see you there!
